At an official dinner before the start of the Australian PGA on the Gold Coast, world number 3, Adam Scott shared his view that the Olympics should be for amateur golfers and not professionals.
“People watch us (as pros) play 45 weeks a year,” Scott said.
“If you really wanted to grow the game you’d have the Olympics for amateurs.”
Although Scott will be participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics he said he felt uncomfortable with the fit for golf.
The defending Australian PGA champion said earlier at a private cocktail party that he has a huge regard for the Olympic ideals.
“Rio is not something I’ve thought a lot about, but it is something I have a desire to be part of,” Scott said.
“I’m not going to change my focus ... it will be on the four majors. The Olympics will not be my priority."
Scott is not alone in his views and it raises once again the question of whether sports like tennis and golf are a good fit for the Olympics, when both already have four majors of greater significance as their pinnacle.
